The Dangers of "Double Depositing"

In the next days and weeks, students will get their regular decision acceptance letters from the various universities they've applied to. I invariably get around this time the question: "Mr. Huh, is it ok if I enroll at University X and ALSO at University Y? Bob and Sally are doing it too, I've heard." First of all, "double depositing" is replying to an acceptance offer with a positive indication that the student will enroll there and also sending electronically via credit card the $300 to $700 enrollment deposit, a kind of promise money that the student will enroll at University X. But the double depositing is then doing that and also at a second university that the student has been accepted to. Most all students have applied to one Common Application university and students signed, in order to submit their application, that "I affirm that I will send an enrollment deposit (or equivalent) to only one institution; sending multiple deposits (or equivalent) may result in the withdrawal of my admission offers from all institutions." So, "double depositing," either accidently or not, will have students have the threat of looming expulsion hanging over their heads, if not an immediate withdrawal of the offer of admission. There's nothing wrong with not replying to an offer of admission at all until students know the result of all of their admission decisions, so wait. And, enroll at only one university, the one you really like. Congratulations and good luck!
